Throughout the lifetime of the association, this non-profit has seen many changes. The association originally began with a small group of Kihei residents, mostly from Menehune Shores Condominium, who showed commitment in restoring Ko`ie`ie Fishpond, the wall and the ecosystem.
This commitment became evident in 1996 when they were successful in listing Ko`ie`ie Fishpond on the State of Hawai`i and National Registers of Historic Places. Once non-profit status was obtained two years later, the organization focused on raising funds to expand its education program and developed an organized Board of Directors. Some of the original founders of `Ao`ao O Na Loko I`a O Maui are still volunteering today and some have moved on.
We have been greatly appreciative of all their past efforts which has formed the future of Ko`ie`ie Fishpond and set the foundation for `Ao`ao O Na Loko I`a O Maui’s mission.
